Shehbaz Sharif urges Iran-US restraint as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for de-escalation during a meeting with Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni in Islamabad. He expressed concern over rising tensions in the Gulf and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to promoting regional peace through dialogue. The prime minister also assured that Pakistan would continue serving as an honest and sincere mediator to encourage peaceful solutions.
Welcoming the Iranian delegation, Shehbaz recalled his recent visit to Tehran to attend the funeral of the late Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Sayyid Ali Khamenei. He conveyed his best wishes to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian. Both sides reviewed bilateral relations and discussed cooperation on issues of mutual interest.
Momeni conveyed greetings from the Iranian leadership and thanked Pakistan for its diplomatic efforts to reduce regional tensions. He praised Prime Minister Shehbaz, Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, and Chief of Defence Forces Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for supporting the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding. He also appreciated the prime minister’s visit to Tehran during a difficult period.
Separately, Momeni met Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir at General Headquarters in Rawalpindi to discuss regional security, border management, and bilateral cooperation. Both sides stressed the importance of close coordination to strengthen regional stability and protect shared interests. The Iranian minister also acknowledged Pakistan’s constructive role in promoting dialogue and encouraging de-escalation.
Momeni arrived in Islamabad with a high-level delegation as tensions between Iran and the United States continue over the Strait of Hormuz. Pakistan has pledged to support diplomatic efforts under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding and continues encouraging both sides to end hostilities. Iranian officials have also confirmed that indirect diplomatic contacts with the United States remain active despite recent military confrontations.
