Pakistan finalized major preparations for hosting a significant regional sporting event. The country will host the 14th South Asian Federation Games from April 4-11, 2027. Therefore, South Asian Games 2027 preparations advance in coordination with the South Asian Olympic Council. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar chaired the Steering Committee meeting specifically. The Games will span Islamabad, Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa collectively.
These Games represent a well-established regional tradition dating back decades. The competition has run since 1984 under Olympic Council supervision. Participating nations include Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Bhutan. Additionally, India, the Maldives, Nepal and Sri Lanka also compete regularly.
This upcoming edition marks the 14th installment specifically. The previous Games occurred in Nepal back in 2019. India finished as the top-performing nation during that edition. However, this 14th edition faced considerable delays throughout planning. Originally scheduled for 2021, the pandemic forced postponement. Additionally, further delays occurred again in January 2026.
The scale of these Games proves genuinely substantial. Twenty-eight different sports will feature at the 2027 Games. More than 6,000 athletes and officials are expected to participate. The program includes athletics, swimming, hockey and football specifically. Additionally, volleyball, boxing and other team sports round out the competition.
The Steering Committee made several important organizational decisions. They approved appointing a National Coordinator for overall management. Additionally, they formed Steering, Organizing and Provincial Committees specifically. These structures will guide comprehensive Games preparation moving forward.
Prime Minister’s Adviser Tariq Bajwa attended this important planning meeting. Additionally, the IPC secretary and provincial government representatives participated actively. Senior federal and provincial officials also joined these crucial discussions.
Dar issued clear directives ensuring successful Games execution. All government departments must maintain close coordination throughout preparation. Additionally, timely venue completion remains absolutely essential. Furthermore, the highest administrative standards must guide organizational efforts. He also mandated monthly Steering Committee meetings specifically. This ensures continuous progress review throughout the preparation period.
