Japan Deploys Long-Range Missiles Amid Rising Tensions With China

In a significant shift in its defense posture, the Japanese government has installed a sophisticated missile system in Kumamoto, situated in the southern region of Kyushu. Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi confirmed on Tuesday that these “standoff defense capabilities” are designed to counter potential invasions and ensure the safety of Japanese personnel.

The newly deployed Type 12 surface-to-ship guided missiles possess a range of approximately 1,000 km. This range is particularly notable as it brings major Chinese coastal hubs, such as Shanghai located roughly 900 km from Kumamoto within reach of Japanese defensive fire.

In addition to the Kumamoto deployment, Japan has stationed a “hyper velocity gliding projectile” in Shizuoka, a coastal area near Tokyo. This technology is specifically intended to defend remote islands from enemy forces, reflecting Japan’s broader strategy to shore up its military capacity in response to increased naval activity in the East China Sea.

Tensions between Tokyo and Beijing have reached a multi-year low, further strained by Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi’s recent hints that Japan could intervene militarily in the event of an attack on Taiwan. China, which claims Taiwan as its territory, has continued to beef up its military presence near the disputed Senkaku Islands.

The deployment has not been without controversy. Earlier this month, local protests erupted in Kumamoto after reports surfaced that the military delivered missile launchers to the base without prior notification to the local community. Critics argue that hosting such high-profile weaponry could make the region a primary target in a potential conflict.

While Japan historically maintained a strict “self-defense only” policy, the government approved plans in 2022 to acquire counterattack capabilities. Officials argue that relying solely on ballistic missile defense is no longer sufficient to address the advanced missile technologies being developed by regional neighbors.
