Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has proposed establishing a Truth and Reconciliation Commission to help resolve political and constitutional issues in Azad Jammu and Kashmir through dialogue. Addressing an election rally in Dadyal, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman described the upcoming elections as among the most important in the region’s history. He said the current political situation demands responsible leadership and constructive engagement from all stakeholders.
Bilawal urged political leaders to focus on solving public issues instead of deepening divisions. He warned that political vacuums often allow non-political and extremist elements to gain influence. Referring to a letter from protesters, he proposed temporarily suspending demonstrations until the commission completed its work and presented recommendations. He said dialogue offers the best path toward lasting political stability.
Bilawal reaffirmed the PPP’s commitment to securing both the international and internal right to self-determination for the people of Kashmir. He said all disputes should be resolved peacefully through dialogue and constitutional mechanisms. He also stressed that Parliament should approve constitutional amendments instead of allowing political disagreements to spill onto the streets.
Furthermore, Bilawal criticised the suspension of internet and mobile phone services in Kashmir. He argued that authorities should not punish ordinary citizens because of the actions of a small number of individuals. He urged both the government and protesters to avoid measures that increase public hardship and weaken confidence in democratic institutions.
Bilawal calls for strong public mandate
The PPP chairman asked voters to give his party a strong mandate in the upcoming elections. He said greater public support would help the PPP pursue constitutional reforms and secure more rights for the people of Azad Jammu and Kashmir. Bilawal also criticised the ruling PML-N over its stance on Kashmir-related issues and demanded clarification from the defence minister regarding recent remarks.
Finally, Bilawal warned that prolonged political instability could create opportunities for undemocratic forces to influence the region. He urged all political parties to prioritise dialogue, constitutional governance, and public welfare over confrontation. He said lasting peace and stability can only emerge through democratic processes and mutual understanding.
