The Xi Jinping Trump Beijing summit begins with a deliberate protocol choice that the world is already reading into
Donald Trump has landed in Beijing. However, Chinese President Xi Jinping was not at the airport to greet him. Instead, Chinese Vice President Han Zheng led the reception, alongside senior foreign affairs officials and both the US and Chinese ambassadors. The Xi Jinping Trump Beijing summit has therefore begun with a diplomatic detail that is already drawing global attention.
This is not the first time Xi has skipped the tarmac. He also did not personally receive Trump during the 2017 visit, the last time a sitting US president travelled to China. Still, analysts note that this reception carried more weight than it may appear. The level of representation is reportedly higher than previous visits, with Vice President Han and other senior Communist Party members present to welcome the delegation.
China’s protocol decisions are rarely accidental. The ranking of officials sent to receive foreign leaders often communicates subtle but deliberate signals. Therefore, while Xi’s absence may look symbolic, the composition of the welcome party suggests Beijing views this visit as significant.
Trump did not arrive alone. He stepped off Air Force One with a high-profile delegation. Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk was on board. So was Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. The presence of two of America’s most powerful tech figures alongside the president adds another layer of intrigue to what is already a consequential trip.
The summit agenda covers trade, energy security, the Iran conflict, and global shipping disruptions. Moreover, tech issues including semiconductor restrictions and artificial intelligence cooperation are also on the table. The optics at the airport, finally, may be just the opening move in a much bigger game.
