Khalil al-Hayya takes Hamas leadership

Khalil al-Hayya has become the new overall leader of Hamas, replacing Yahya Sinwar, who was killed during fighting with Israeli forces in October 2024. Hamas announced the leadership change on Monday. The group continues to face military, political, and diplomatic challenges after nearly two years of conflict in Gaza. Based in Doha, al-Hayya has become one of the movement’s most influential figures.

Before his appointment, Khalil al-Hayya served as Hamas’s Gaza chief and chief negotiator. He led ceasefire talks with regional mediators. After the deaths of Yahya Sinwar and former political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in 2024, he became one of the group’s senior decision-makers. His appointment is expected to ensure continuity in Hamas’s political and military strategy.

Political analysts believe Khalil al-Hayya’s appointment signals Hamas’s intention to maintain its current policies. These include rejecting international calls for the group to disarm. Palestinian political analyst Reham Owda said future disarmament negotiations are likely to remain difficult. She added that the leadership change comes as diplomatic efforts continue to seek a lasting solution to the Gaza conflict.

Meanwhile, violence continued in Gaza despite the October ceasefire. Palestinian medics said Israeli strikes killed at least six people on Monday. Three people died in Khan Younis, while three others were killed at a hospital shelter in Jabalia. The Israeli military said it targeted a militant in Khan Younis but did not comment on the reported hospital strike.

Regional mediation efforts continue

The appointment followed an internal election involving Hamas representatives from Gaza, the occupied West Bank, Israeli prisons, and members living in exile. Meanwhile, Egypt, Qatar, and Türkiye continued mediation efforts to secure a broader agreement. However, negotiators have not reached a comprehensive breakthrough to end the conflict.

Observers believe Khalil al-Hayya will play a key role in shaping Hamas’s future political direction. He is also expected to oversee ongoing negotiations with regional mediators.
