Speaking at a press conference in Berlin, Chancellor Merz clarified that Germany remains distanced from the ongoing conflict. He emphasized that the current war does not fall under the jurisdiction of NATO.
The Chancellor explained that the German Basic Law requires specific mandates from the United Nations or European Union for such involvement. Currently, no such legal framework exists to authorize German military participation.
Merz further noted that neither the United States nor Israel consulted the German government before initiating these strikes. Without a joint strategic decision, the question of German military support simply does not arise.
Germany intends to maintain its constitutional stance while observing the rapidly escalating situation in the Middle East. The government remains focused on domestic stability and international law during this period of heightened tension.
