WhatsApp is finally eliminating the requirement to exchange phone numbers for those who prefer privacy. The WhatsApp username feature is now allowing users to reserve usernames before the feature becomes available later this year. This represents a significant shift in how people connect on the messaging platform.
The feature will let people connect on WhatsApp without sharing their personal phone numbers. Reservations are starting this week and require the latest version of WhatsApp. Therefore, interested users should update their app immediately to secure their preferred username.

How to Reserve a Username
Users can open WhatsApp and navigate to Settings > Account > Username. They can then select and reserve a username for use when the feature launches in their country. The WhatsApp username feature does not appear to be available in Pakistan just yet, as the username option is not showing on the latest version of WhatsApp.
The company is opening reservations early because more than 3 billion people use WhatsApp. Therefore, many users may want similar names. Early reservation ensures that individuals can secure their preferred usernames before demand exceeds availability.
Phone Numbers Stay Private
Once the WhatsApp username feature launches, people who enable it will be able to message a person or business for the first time without showing their phone number. The recipient will see the username instead. This provides a crucial privacy protection for users concerned about sharing contact information.
The feature is optional, so users will not be required to create or use a username. Therefore, traditional phone-number-based messaging remains available for those preferring the established method.
No Public Directory
WhatsApp will not provide a public directory of usernames or suggest accounts to users. A person will need to know someone’s exact username before contacting them for the first time. This approach maintains privacy by preventing random contact discovery.
WhatsApp is also adding an optional username key. Users can require others to know this key before they can send a message through a username. So additional security layers are available for those desiring extra protection.
Existing Social Media Names
Creators, small businesses, and organisations will have an option to claim usernames they already use on Instagram or Facebook. This will allow them to maintain the same name across Meta’s platforms when the username is available. So businesses can build consistent branding across multiple Meta services.
Gradual Rollout
WhatsApp will introduce the WhatsApp username feature gradually over the coming months. The company will notify users through the app when the feature becomes available in their country. Therefore, global rollout will occur in phases rather than all at once. Reserving a name now does not mean the full username feature is immediately available for messaging. Users should wait for official notifications confirming when usernames work in their region.
