Karachi Port ship collision

Karachi Port ship collision between MV Niwa and MV Papu sparks a formal probe as authorities confirm alleged negligence by both vessel masters

Two ships crashed near the limits of Karachi Port on the night of May 28. Authorities are now pointing at the captains of both vessels. The Karachi Port ship collision involved MV Niwa and MV Papu and took place outside the port’s operational boundary. Moreover, Federal Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry confirmed that investigators have launched a formal probe to determine exactly what happened.

Nobody died or sustained injuries in the collision. Port operations continued without disruption throughout the incident. Furthermore, the Karachi Port Trust responded quickly. KPT tugboats assisted in bringing the damaged cable-laying vessel safely into port. Minister Chaudhry praised port authorities for their swift action. Therefore, despite the collision, the response on the ground drew official commendation.

The minister pointed directly at human error as the cause. He said alleged negligence by both vessel masters led to the accident. That finding rules out mechanical failure or adverse weather as primary factors. Furthermore, KPT Chairman Rear Admiral Shahid Ahmed confirmed that his team provided the damaged vessel with full technical and operational support after it entered port.

KPT also confirmed that maritime operations stayed completely normal throughout the incident. Therefore, the collision created no wider disruption to Karachi’s busy port activity. Still, investigators have not yet released their full findings. Officials confirmed they will share additional details once the inquiry concludes.

Karachi Port handles a significant share of Pakistan’s trade flows. Any incident near its limits draws immediate attention from maritime and trade authorities alike. Finally, the investigation will determine whether authorities take further action against the captains whose alleged negligence brought two ships together in the waters off Pakistan’s busiest port.
