Sindh Eid holiday schedule extends to four days as the provincial government goes beyond the federal three-day announcement
Sindh residents are getting a longer Eid break than the rest of the country. The Sindh government announced a four-day holiday schedule for Eid ul Adha on Friday, extending the break by one day beyond the federal government’s announcement. Under the Sindh Eid holiday schedule, all government offices and autonomous bodies across the province will remain closed from May 26 to May 29. Moreover, that extra day gives Sindh employees a more generous festive window than their federal counterparts.
The federal government had earlier announced three public holidays from May 26 to May 28. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved that schedule following the confirmation of the Eid date. However, Sindh moved independently to extend the break by one additional day. Therefore, provincial government employees in Sindh will enjoy a four-day official holiday rather than three.
The Eid date itself was confirmed after the Central Ruet-i-Hilal Committee sighted the Zilhaj moon on May 17. The committee held its meeting at the Pakistan Meteorological Department in Karachi and subsequently declared that Eid ul Adha would fall on May 27 across Pakistan. Furthermore, with the three official holidays followed by a weekend, many workers across the country are effectively looking at a five-day break regardless of their province.
Still, Sindh’s decision to go further than the federal schedule reflects the province’s tradition of announcing its own holiday calendar independently. Finally, for government employees in Sindh, the extended break means more time with family during one of the most significant religious occasions of the year.
