Nadia Jamil Urges CM Maryam Nawaz to Crack Down on Animal Cruelty in Punjab

In a heartfelt public appeal, renowned Pakistani actress and activist Nadia Jamil has called on Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to take decisive action against the growing issue of animal cruelty in the province.

Shared via social media in a co-authored petition with actress Uzma Hassan, Jamil’s message highlights the deep connections between animal mistreatment and broader societal problems. She argues that cruelty toward animals doesn’t exist in isolation — it normalizes violence, impacts children’s psychological well-being, and reflects the values passed down to future generations.

“Cruelty in society never stays isolated. When violence becomes normal, children grow up believing it is normal,” Jamil stated. She emphasized Pakistan’s obligations under the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, noting that exposure to animal abuse can contribute to cycles of domestic violence and harm.

The appeal comes amid ongoing concerns in Punjab, including reports of mistreatment of street animals, exotic pets under stress, and incidents like the demolition-related harm to animals at a pet market near Lahore’s Data Darbar. Celebrities such as Ushna Shah (who made a similar plea earlier in February) and Zhalay Sarhadi have also voiced support for better animal welfare.

Jamil urged the public to sign and share the petition, directly tagging CM Maryam Nawaz’s official account to bring it to her attention. She expressed confidence in the Chief Minister’s commitment to building a “safer, more compassionate Punjab,” stressing that protecting the most vulnerable — be they children or animals — strengthens moral foundations for society.

As cases of animal abuse continue to surface and gain public attention, this appeal underscores a growing movement in Pakistan’s entertainment industry and civil society for stricter enforcement of animal protection policies.

Will CM Maryam Nawaz respond with concrete steps? The petition, already gathering signatures, signals that many Pakistanis hope for meaningful change.
