Punjab schools and colleges may begin summer vacations earlier than usual this year. The provincial government is reviewing the academic calendar amid rising temperatures and heatwave concerns across the province. Consequently, summer vacations in Punjab may start from May 22 according to the proposed schedule. Punjab Minister for School Education and Higher Education Rana Sikandar Hayat confirmed the government’s considerations.

Speaking to Geo News, the minister said a final decision on the proposed schedule would take place on May 11. The government will review the weather situation and conduct consultations with relevant departments before announcing the final dates. The proposed plan would see educational institutions reopen on August 2. The minister added that the Punjab government is also discussing a proposal to organize summer camps during the vacation period.

The development comes after the Punjab Disaster Management Authority issued a weather advisory. The PDMA warned of above normal temperatures and rainfall during May, June, and July across the province. Plain areas of Punjab will face a higher risk of heatwave conditions during May due to above normal temperatures. Therefore, summer vacations in Punjab would protect students from extreme heat if the government approves the early closure.

Last year, the Punjab government announced summer vacations from May 28 to August 14. The government later extended the holidays until August 31 due to extreme weather conditions. This year’s proposed schedule would start nearly one week earlier than last year’s initial plan. Parents and students should wait for the final announcement on May 11 before making travel or study plans.
