Music groups have introduced a new system to identify songs created with artificial intelligence. The new AI content labels help fans understand how artists use AI in music production. The labels are voluntary, and major streaming platforms may adopt them in the future.
The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) and the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) announced the labels. Six other organizations, including the group behind the Grammy Awards, joined the project. According to the organizers, fans want clear information about AI-created music.
The AI-generated label covers recordings that artificial intelligence creates entirely or produces most of the creative elements. It also covers songs with AI-generated lead vocals or key instrumental tracks. In addition, it applies to music created only from AI prompts.
The AI-assisted label covers music that people create with help from artificial intelligence. Human artists still perform the lead vocals and the main instrumental parts. Therefore, the recording continues to reflect human creativity.
The organizations want the labels to become a global standard. They also encourage streaming services to use them. As a result, listeners can quickly understand how artists created each recording.
Deezer already marks AI-generated songs on its platform. The company recently reported that AI-generated content appears in nearly half of all new uploads. In June, Deezer launched an AI music detector that identifies AI-created tracks with 99.8% accuracy.
Apple Music has also reported rapid growth in AI-created songs. Earlier this year, one executive told Billboard that AI created more than one-third of new uploads. Meanwhile, the Digital Media Association welcomed the new labels because better AI metadata can improve transparency across streaming services.
Spotify continues to improve trust on its platform. In April, the company launched its “Verified by Spotify” label to confirm authentic artists. It also expanded its efforts to stop impersonation. As artificial intelligence changes the music industry, AI content labels can help fans make informed choices and increase transparency.
