Karachi Port receives first Ro-Ro electric vehicle shipment

Karachi Port has received Pakistan’s first roll-on/roll-off (Ro-Ro) shipment carrying more than 2,000 electric vehicles, marking a major milestone for the country’s maritime and trade sector. The vessel MV Grande Shanghai successfully berthed at the port, introducing the Ro-Ro shipping system for vehicle imports for the first time. Officials said the development reflects ongoing efforts to modernise Pakistan’s port operations and improve trade efficiency.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Maritime Affairs said the shipment demonstrates the growing capacity of Pakistan’s ports to handle modern logistics systems. Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry described the arrival as a historic achievement. He said Ro-Ro operations would improve cargo handling and strengthen the country’s maritime infrastructure.

Ro-Ro vessels transport wheeled cargo, including cars, trucks, and trailers, without using traditional shipping containers. Workers drive vehicles directly onto the vessel at the departure port and off again after arrival. This process reduces loading and unloading time while improving operational efficiency. It also helps minimise delays and eases pressure on busy port facilities.

Industry experts believe the Ro-Ro system can lower logistics costs and speed up vehicle clearance. They also expect it to reduce port congestion by simplifying cargo handling procedures. Faster operations could encourage more importers to use this shipping method in the future. Officials see the system as an important step toward modernising Pakistan’s maritime logistics.

The arrival of more than 2,000 electric vehicles also highlights growing interest in Pakistan’s expanding EV market. Authorities hope wider availability of electric vehicles will encourage cleaner transportation and reduce dependence on conventional fuel-powered vehicles. The shipment supports broader national efforts to promote environmentally friendly mobility solutions.

Officials have not yet announced details about the manufacturers, importers, or distribution schedule for the vehicles. However, they expect the shipment to strengthen both Pakistan’s automotive industry and maritime trade. They also believe future Ro-Ro operations will improve logistics efficiency and support long-term growth in the country’s transport sector.
