Karachi’s civic leadership faced unexpected disruption this week. A fire broke out at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation head office specifically. Therefore, this Karachi Mayor office fire destroyed Murtaza Wahab’s workspace entirely. According to fire department officials, the blaze started in a kitchen adjacent to the mayor’s office. Firefighters responded quickly, successfully bringing the fire under control.
The fire department later confirmed complete extinguishment of the blaze. No casualty details were immediately available following this incident.
This fire follows closely after another major incident recently. Just one day prior, a significant fire struck an old-clothes factory. This occurred specifically in Karachi’s Landhi Export Processing Zone. Three people, including one woman, reportedly suffered breathing difficulties during that incident.
Authorities classified the Landhi fire as third-degree severity specifically. The Karachi fire brigade deployed substantial resources combating these flames. This included 11 fire tenders, two water tankers and a snorkel unit. Additionally, officials called for reinforcement fire tenders during the operation.
These incidents represent part of a troubling pattern this year. Karachi has witnessed several serious fires throughout 2026 specifically. Therefore, growing concerns emerge regarding fire safety and emergency preparedness citywide.
Earlier incidents proved particularly devastating for the city. A deadly fire at Gul Plaza, a major shopping center, killed more than 70 people. This tragedy also exposed serious safety shortcomings throughout the city’s infrastructure.
Gul Plaza’s scale made this tragedy especially significant. The complex housed nearly 1,200 businesses across multiple levels. This included basement, mezzanine and three additional floors specifically. The shopping center contained clothing, toys, household goods and various other merchandise. Much of this inventory suffered destruction during the catastrophic fire.
Finally, this Karachi Mayor office fire adds another incident to the city’s concerning fire safety record, reinforcing calls for comprehensive infrastructure review and improved emergency preparedness across Karachi’s public and commercial buildings.
