Pakistan’s telecom legislation faces significant revision following public concern. The IT Ministry prepared a revised draft addressing Telecom Bill property concerns specifically. This follows recommendations from a committee formed by the Prime Minister directly. The National Assembly originally passed this bill on June 11, 2026. Subsequently, it moved to the Senate, which referred it to standing committee review on June 15.
Committee lawmakers raised specific concerns regarding private property provisions. Additionally, the bill faced substantial criticism across social media platforms. This prompted the Prime Minister establishing a dedicated review committee. Azam Nazeer Tarar headed this committee examining disputed provisions specifically.
The committee’s recommendations focused on two critical areas. First, strengthening protections for private property received priority attention. Second, addressing concerns surrounding right-of-way provisions proved equally important. Therefore, the revised draft incorporates these specific recommendations comprehensively.
The government now prepares reintroducing this legislation in the National Assembly. Officials expect presenting the revised bill during the next session specifically. However, before formal tabling occurs, the government plans consulting coalition partners first. This consultation ensures broader political support before proceeding.
This revision follows an important procedural development recently. The government withdrew the original bill from the Senate on August 28 specifically. This withdrawal occurred before completing the mandatory 90-day constitutional period. Otherwise, a joint parliamentary sitting would have become necessary. Reports indicate withdrawal happened because no joint sitting had been scheduled.
