Indian Billionaire’s Son Offers to Save Escobar’s Hippos

Indian billionaire’s son offers to save Escobar’s hippos as Colombia faces a growing wildlife crisis. The unusual proposal aims to relocate a herd linked to a notorious drug lord. Moreover, the offer comes as authorities struggle to control the rapidly expanding population. The issue has drawn global attention due to environmental and safety concerns.

The hippos were originally imported by Pablo Escobar, who kept them at his private estate, Hacienda Nápoles. After his death in 1993, the animals were left to roam freely. As a result, their numbers increased rapidly in the wild. Today, they live mainly along the Magdalena River basin.

Anant Ambani, son of Mukesh Ambani, has offered to take in the animals. He proposed relocating them to his private zoo, Vantara, in India’s Gujarat state. Furthermore, the zoo’s management said it would provide lifelong care for the herd. Colombian authorities have not yet responded to the proposal.

Colombia has struggled for years to manage the hippo population. Officials have tried measures like sterilization, but these efforts have not worked effectively. Therefore, the government recently decided to cull around 80 animals. Environmentalists argue that the hippos threaten local ecosystems and native species.

The animals, often called “cocaine hippos,” have adapted well to Colombia’s environment. With no natural predators and abundant resources, their population has grown quickly. In addition, some attacks on local communities have raised safety concerns. These factors have increased pressure on authorities to act.

However, the relocation plan has sparked debate among conservationists. Some question whether India’s climate is suitable for the animals. Others also criticize private zoos for ethical reasons. In conclusion, Indian billionaire’s son offers to save Escobar’s hippos, but the final decision will depend on Colombia’s environmental policies and global conservation concerns.
