Pakistan defense budget increase declared unavoidable by Rana Sanaullah as regional security pressures demand higher military spending

Pakistan’s defense spending is heading upward. Federal Minister Rana Sanaullah said on Wednesday that increasing the defense budget is unavoidable. Current regional and national security conditions leave no room for hesitation. The defense budget increase, he argued, is not a choice. It is a necessity. Moreover, he stressed that Pakistan is navigating an exceptionally difficult environment with dignity and resilience — and that requires serious financial backing.

Speaking to a private news channel, Sanaullah was direct. Defense spending must align with current realities. The country cannot maintain security preparedness without adjusting allocations to match the threat environment. Furthermore, he framed the increase as a response to circumstances Pakistan did not create. Therefore, the government is signalling that next week’s budget will reflect those pressures clearly.

The minister also addressed the 18th Constitutional Amendment. He called it a positive reform. It transferred meaningful powers to the provinces. Furthermore, he said increased authority brings increased responsibility. Provincial governments must take greater ownership of the social sector. That domain falls under their constitutional jurisdiction. Therefore, the federal government is drawing a clear line between central funding and provincial obligation.

Sanaullah’s comments come days before the June 10 budget presentation. Defense allocations typically attract significant scrutiny from analysts, opposition parties, and civil society. Furthermore, regional tensions from the US-Iran conflict and earlier India-Pakistan friction make the political case for higher military spending easier than usual.

Still, every rupee added to defense is a rupee taken from health, education, or infrastructure. Finally, how the government balances those competing demands in a single budget will shape Pakistan’s economic conversation for months to come.
