Government reviews new austerity measures
Government officials are reviewing a new round of austerity measures as rising global oil prices and growing Iran-United States tensions increase pressure on Pakistan’s economy. The proposed steps aim to reduce public spending and manage the financial impact of higher energy costs. Sources said authorities will issue a formal notification after completing consultations and securing final approval.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is consulting relevant stakeholders on additional measures to reduce government expenditures. Officials want to limit unnecessary spending while protecting public finances during a period of economic uncertainty. Sources expect the government to implement the new package later this week or next week after completing the approval process.
Government authorities are considering introducing a work-from-home policy for selected government offices to reduce electricity and fuel consumption. The proposal also aims to lower operational costs while improving energy conservation. Relevant ministries are finalising the implementation mechanism before the government announces the final decision.
Officials are also reviewing stricter limits on the use of official vehicles and fuel allocations for government departments. In addition, authorities may reduce non-essential official travel, meetings, and administrative expenses. These measures seek to improve the efficient use of public resources during ongoing economic challenges.
Sources said ministries and government institutions will receive fresh instructions once the package receives final approval. Officials believe tighter spending controls will help reduce the financial impact of volatile global energy markets. They also expect the measures to strengthen fiscal discipline across government departments.
Meanwhile, some austerity measures have already appeared in markets and bazaars as part of broader energy conservation efforts. The government believes additional spending controls will help reduce economic risks linked to regional instability and rising fuel prices. Authorities will announce the final policy after completing consultations with all relevant stakeholders.
