Google has officially released Gemma 4, its latest and most intelligent open-source AI model family. The company launched it on April 2, 2026.
Gemma 4 is built using the same advanced research and technology as Google’s powerful Gemini 3 model. It is designed to perform complex thinking, reasoning, and “agentic” tasks (tasks where AI can act on its own, like using tools and planning steps).
Main Highlights of Gemma 4
- Fully Open Source: Gemma 4 comes with a very friendly Apache 2.0 license. This means anyone can use it freely, even for commercial purposes.
- Four Different Sizes: Google released four versions so it can run on different devices:
- E2B (small, fast for phones and edge devices)
- E4B (slightly bigger and more capable)
- 26B MoE (Mixture of Experts – good balance of speed and power)
- 31B Dense (largest and most powerful version)
- Strong Capabilities:
- Advanced reasoning and problem-solving
- Can understand text, images, and audio (multimodal)
- Supports up to 256,000 tokens context window (very long memory)
- Works in over 140 languages
- Excellent at coding, planning, and using tools
- Runs Locally: You can run Gemma 4 on your own computer, laptop, or even mobile devices without sending data to the cloud.
Many big AI companies keep their best models closed. Google is making Gemma 4 fully open so developers, researchers, and companies around the world can use it, modify it, and build new applications on top of it.
It is especially useful for:
- Running AI on phones and laptops (on-device AI)
- Building smart agents that can do tasks automatically
- Coding assistance
- Privacy-focused applications (data stays on your device)
You can start using Gemma 4 right now on:
- Google AI Studio
- Hugging Face
- Kaggle
- Ollama
- Google Cloud
Developers can also download the full model weights and fine-tune them for their own needs.
With Gemma 4, Google has made very powerful AI technology available to everyone. It brings advanced reasoning and tool-using abilities that were previously only available in closed models.
This release is a big step for open AI development. Many experts believe Gemma 4 will help speed up innovation in the AI community.
