Sri Lanka Chase 430 to Stun England, Second-Best in ODI History

Sri Lanka vs England

Sri Lanka chased down 430 to beat England by two wickets at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium on Thursday, October 22, 2026. It is the second-highest successful chase in one-day international history, behind South Africa’s famous 435-run chase against Australia in 2006, according to ESPNcricinfo.

Janith Liyanage sealed the win with a six off the second-last ball of the match.

Harry Brook’s record goes to waste

England batted first and scored 429 for 4. That is now the highest ODI total ever made in Pakistan, beating Pakistan’s own 375 for 3 against Zimbabwe in Lahore in 2015, ESPNcricinfo reported.

Captain Harry Brook scored 202 off 116 balls, with 21 fours and 10 sixes. It is the fastest double century in ODI history and the first by an England player, Aaj News and ANI reported.

Harry Brook added 185 runs for the fourth wicket with Will Jacks, who hit 66 not out off 30 balls. Joe Root made 69 and Tom Banton 50. England scored 156 runs in their last 10 overs.

Harry Brook was not celebrating afterwards. “It has no value whatsoever,” he told Sky Sports, speaking about his innings in a losing cause.

A bad start, then a fightback

Sri Lanka slipped to 24 for 2, with captain Kusal Mendis run out for a duck. Pavan Rathnayake and Avishka Fernando then added 166 runs for the third wicket.

Pavan Rathnayake top-scored with 130 off 106 balls. Avishka Fernando fell three short of a century on 97. Dasun Shanaka also made 97, off just 50 balls with eight sixes.

The finish was tense. Sri Lanka needed eight runs from the final over, bowled by Josh Tongue. He bowled two batters with back-to-back balls, but Janith Liyanage stayed calm and finished on 61 not out off 27 balls.

Former England captain Nasser Hussain said on Sky Sports that Sri Lanka “had to be pretty much perfect” for 50 overs, and they were.

In total, the two teams scored 859 runs in the match.

One win puts Pakistan in the final

England have now lost both their matches in the tri-series, to Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Pakistan have won both of theirs, and Sri Lanka have one win and one loss.

That makes Sunday’s match in Lahore very important. If Pakistan beat England on October 25, they will have three wins. England can then win at most one match, so Pakistan would be sure of a place in the final on October 31, barring washed-out games.

Pakistan’s last league match is against Sri Lanka in Lahore on October 27.
