The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has arrested an official of the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) over alleged corruption. The suspect, identified as Aftab, is a NADRA assistant director. FIA’s Counter Terrorism Wing (CTW) made the arrest. The agency alleges he took Rs. 120 million to restore canceled identity cards belonging to Afghan nationals.
According to investigators, the money was received to facilitate the restoration of canceled Computerized National Identity Cards (CNICs). Aftab allegedly took it for restoring the cards of 51 Afghan nationals. Meanwhile, investigators raided the suspect’s residence and recovered Rs. 1.9 million in cash.
The FIA also alleges that part of the remaining money was used to buy property. Aftab allegedly purchased plots in Havelian and Islamabad’s G-15 sector. Moreover, FIA officials have obtained documents related to those properties. These papers could play a key role in tracing the money.
The Counter Terrorism Wing is continuing its investigation. Its aim is to determine the full extent of the alleged corruption. Furthermore, investigators want to identify any other individuals who may have been involved. Therefore, more arrests could follow if the probe finds additional links.
The arrest comes as authorities continue scrutiny of identity documentation. Officials are also examining alleged irregularities involving Pakistani CNICs issued to foreign nationals. Still, the allegations against Aftab have not been proven in court. Finally, the case will show how deep the problem runs inside the identity system.
