Blue Origin New Glenn Targets First Booster Reuse Milestone

Blue Origin New Glenn targets its first booster reuse milestone in a major test against rivals. The mission marks a key moment for Blue Origin as it attempts to reuse a previously flown rocket stage. The outcome could shape the company’s future in the competitive space launch industry.

The NG-3 mission represents the third operational test of the New Glenn, which stands 322 feet tall. Engineers designed the rocket for up to 25 reusable missions. This test will show whether the company can reliably recover and reuse boosters, a milestone already achieved by SpaceX.

Meanwhile, the mission will carry a major payload called BlueBird 7. Built by AST SpaceMobile, the satellite aims to provide direct-to-cellphone internet service. It features a massive antenna spanning about 2,400 square feet, making it one of the largest commercial satellites in low Earth orbit.

The booster used in this mission previously flew during the NG-2 launch. It successfully landed on the droneship Jacklyn in the Atlantic Ocean. For this flight, engineers replaced all seven BE-4 engines and added upgrades, including improved thermal protection, to enhance performance and safety.

In addition, the New Glenn rocket plays a central role in future lunar missions. It is expected to carry the Blue Moon lander as part of NASA’s Artemis program. The agency plans a crewed Moon landing around 2027, depending on which system completes testing first.
