Pakistan’s trade deficit worsened significantly at the end of fiscal year 2025-26. The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics released new data showing the cumulative trade deficit reached $39.5 billion. This represents a 50 percent increase year-on-year compared to $26.27 billion in FY25. Over the 12-month period, imports rose by nearly 20 percent to $69.597 billion. Meanwhile, exports declined by 6.2 percent to $30.126 billion. Therefore, both factors contributed to the widening imbalance.
June 2026 data reveals particularly concerning trends for the final month. The country recorded a trade deficit of $4.528 billion in June 2026 alone. This represents a 90.9 percent increase compared to $2.372 billion last year. The gap also increased by 75.4 percent compared to $2.582 billion in May 2026. So month-on-month deterioration accelerated sharply as the fiscal year concluded.
In June alone, exports reached $2.239 billion, declining 9.6 percent year-on-year. Additionally, imports rose to $6.767 billion, surging 39.6 percent year-on-year. Therefore, the trade deficit worsened dramatically in the final month. This sharp month-end deterioration reflects broader structural challenges in Pakistan’s economy.
The widening trade deficit reflects multiple underlying issues. Export-oriented industries face competitive pressures and demand softness in international markets. Moreover, import growth suggests strong domestic consumption despite economic constraints. However, the import surge also reflects infrastructure and industrial development needs. So Pakistan must balance growing consumption with production capacity constraints.
Policy responses will prove critical going forward. Officials must pursue policies that encourage export growth across sectors. Furthermore, they should implement measures to rationalize non-essential imports. Additionally, attracting foreign investment in manufacturing could boost export competitiveness. Finally, addressing the deficit requires sustained commitment to economic reforms and productivity improvements.
