An additional wheat supply for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa worth 50,000 metric tons gets the green light from the ECC
The federal government has moved to shore up food supplies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Economic Coordination Committee approved an additional 50,000 metric tons of wheat from PASSCO stocks on Friday. The move aims to meet growing provincial wheat requirements and stabilize food availability across the region.
Federal Minister for Finance and Revenue Senator Muhammad Aurangzeb chaired the ECC meeting at the Finance Division. The Ministry of National Food Security and Research submitted the summary flagging the province’s need for additional grain. The committee acted swiftly on the request.
Under the decision, the wheat will go out at a rate of Rs. 4,150 per 40 kilograms. This fixed rate gives the province predictable pricing as it manages its food supply chain. Furthermore, drawing directly from PASSCO stocks allows for faster delivery without depending on open market procurement.
Officials confirmed the allocation will help ensure adequate wheat availability across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Moreover, it will support the broader food supply needs of the province through the current season.
The wheat supply for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was one of several decisions the ECC took during the same session. The committee also approved a number of other financial proposals and Technical Supplementary Grants from various ministries and departments.
For Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the timing matters greatly. Wheat is a staple commodity. Any shortfall can quickly translate into price pressures at the retail level. Therefore, securing an additional 50,000 metric tons through official channels gives the provincial government meaningful buffer stock for the months ahead.
The decision also reflects the federal government’s continued use of PASSCO reserves as a stabilization tool. However, long-term food security in the province will depend on stronger local production and more consistent supply chain management beyond emergency allocations.
