EV battery testing in Pakistan is set for a major overhaul as authorities crack down on substandard manufacturers
Pakistan’s electric vehicle market is growing fast. However, not everything under the hood is up to standard. The government has decided to introduce a strict testing and verification mechanism for EV batteries. The move comes after concerns emerged that some local manufacturers are fitting vehicles with substandard components.
The decision follows a sharp rise in EV demand across Pakistan. The US-Israel-Iran war and the resulting surge in oil prices have pushed more consumers toward electric vehicles. Additionally, EVs sit at the heart of Pakistan’s clean mobility ambitions. Battery quality has therefore become a matter of both safety and national policy.
The matter came up during a recent meeting of the executive committee of the National Coordination and Management Council. The council expressed serious concern about certain EV manufacturers. Members noted these companies were not properly following prescribed quality and safety standards. Substandard or uncertified batteries, they warned, could endanger consumers, hurt vehicle performance, and damage Pakistan’s emerging EV ecosystem.
The council directed the Engineering Development Board to collaborate with the National Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority. Together, they will develop a robust inspection, testing, and verification framework for EV batteries. Other relevant stakeholders will also contribute to the process.
The proposed framework is comprehensive. It may include certification requirements and periodic inspections. Furthermore, authorities plan ongoing compliance monitoring of both manufacturers and importers. Companies that fail to meet the required standards may also face strict enforcement action.
The Ministry of Industries and Production, EDB, and NEECA have all received directives to begin work immediately. The goal is to bring EV battery testing in Pakistan fully in line with international standards. This would close a gap that has allowed low-quality products into a rapidly growing market.
The timing matters. Pakistan’s EV sector is still young. A few high-profile safety incidents involving faulty batteries could significantly set back consumer confidence. Moreover, global EV brands and overseas investors watching Pakistan’s market will factor regulatory seriousness into their decisions.
By moving now, the government is sending a clear signal. Growth in the EV sector must come with accountability. The framework, once in place, should give consumers greater confidence. It will also push manufacturers to compete on quality rather than cut corners on cost.
