Apple Intelligence iPhone support for advanced on-device AI excludes the standard iPhone 17 as Apple sets a 12GB memory requirement most devices cannot meet
Apple announced impressive new AI features at WWDC 2026. However, most iPhone users will not get access to the most advanced ones. Apple confirmed that its most powerful on-device AI model requires at least 12GB of unified memory. The Apple Intelligence iPhone support limitation means the standard iPhone 17 is excluded. Moreover, only the iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max meet the hardware requirements.
Siri AI Features
The advanced on-device model powers some of the most compelling new Siri capabilities. These include more expressive Siri voices and significantly improved systemwide dictation. Furthermore, the upgraded dictation handles capitalisation, punctuation, and formatting with greater accuracy than before. Therefore, users who want the best version of the new Siri will need compatible hardware.
Supported iPhones
Support on iPhone is limited to three models. The iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max all qualify. However, the standard iPhone 17 does not. Furthermore, the standard model carries 8GB of RAM — below the threshold Apple set for its most advanced on-device AI features. Therefore, millions of buyers who choose the base iPhone 17 will miss out on the headline AI capabilities Apple showcased at WWDC.
Supported iPads and Macs
iPad users need an M4 chip or later with at least 12GB of unified memory to access the advanced features. Furthermore, Mac users require an M3 chip or later with the same 12GB memory minimum. Therefore, older iPad and Mac models will also fall outside the supported range for the most capable AI features.
Vision Pro Support
Apple Vision Pro with the M5 chip will support the advanced on-device model. Furthermore, expressive Siri voices are also available on Vision Pro with M5. Therefore, Apple’s spatial computing platform gets full access to the new AI capabilities.
What It Means
Many Apple Intelligence features will still reach a wider range of devices. However, the most advanced on-device Siri AI remains restricted to newer, higher-memory hardware. Furthermore, users on unsupported devices will receive a limited Apple Intelligence experience rather than the full version. Finally, Apple’s memory requirement effectively creates a two-tier AI experience — and most iPhone owners land in the lower tier.
