iPhone Duo Launches as Apple’s First-Ever Foldable Smartphone

iPhone Duo foldable

Apple has officially entered the foldable phone race with the iPhone Duo foldable, marking a first for the company’s smartphone lineup. The device uses a book-style hinge that opens into a spacious 7.6-inch display while keeping a smaller screen active when closed. Apple built the Duo to function as both a standard phone and a larger productivity device, letting users run apps side by side, handle documents, and enjoy video or gaming on the bigger canvas. For the first time on an iPhone, the company also added Apple Pencil support to the foldable.

Design and Display

The Duo follows a short, wide, passport-style shape rather than a tall slab. Closed, it shows a 5.4-inch outer display; unfolded, that expands to a 7.6-inch inner screen, which Apple calls the largest display it has ever fitted to an iPhone. This larger canvas gives users considerably more room to work than a standard iPhone allows, and Apple has built side-by-side app support directly into the experience.

Both panels run ProMotion at up to 120Hz. Additionally, the inner display uses a custom surface engineered to soften the visibility of the crease once the phone opens, along with a scratch-resistant coating layered on top. The frame itself combines titanium with ceramic-fiber reinforcement, and Apple paired it with second-generation Ceramic Shield for added durability. The Duo also carries an IP68 rating, so dust and water resistance remain intact despite the folding design. Buyers can choose between Star White and Night Sky finishes.

Notably, Face ID does not appear on this model. Instead, Apple moved Touch ID to the side of the device, a shift that let engineers fit the authentication hardware into the thinner foldable body.

Internals and Software

Under the hood, the iPhone Duo runs on Apple’s new A20 Pro chip, manufactured using a 2-nanometer process. It pairs a six-core CPU with a seven-core GPU, and a 32-core Neural Engine handles on-device AI work. Apple’s C2 modem manages cellular connectivity throughout.

On the software side, the Duo ships with iOS 27, which Apple adapted specifically for the two-screen format. The system transitions between the outer and inner displays automatically as the phone opens and closes, and the larger internal screen allows multiple apps to run simultaneously. Connectivity rounds out the package with USB-C, Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, NFC, and MagSafe wireless charging support.

AI Features

Apple Intelligence runs across the Duo through iOS 27, with the A20 Pro’s Neural Engine processing tasks directly on the device. For requests that demand extra computing power, the broader Apple Intelligence system calls on Private Cloud Compute. The Duo also inherits every AI tool introduced with iOS 27, including the redesigned Siri experience and AI-assisted image editing.

The foldable shape adds a practical dimension to these features, too. The larger inner screen gives AI-generated content, editing tools, and multitasking controls considerably more room to display information clearly.

Cameras

The Duo carries a dual 48MP rear camera system, though it skips the third telephoto lens found on the iPhone 18 Pro lineup. A front-facing camera handles video calls, while an under-display camera on the inner screen lets Apple avoid a visible cutout on that larger panel.

Because the rear cameras remain active when the phone is unfolded, the large internal display can also double as a viewfinder. Rather than matching the three-camera setup on its Pro models, Apple chose to prioritize fitting two high-resolution sensors into a notably thinner foldable body.

Battery and Pricing

The Duo splits its power across two battery cells, one positioned in each half of the foldable frame. Apple rates the device for up to 44 hours of use on the outer display, though that figure drops to roughly 31 hours of video playback on the larger inner screen. Still, this dual-battery layout lets Apple make efficient use of the space available on both sides of the device. MagSafe wireless charging remains supported as well.

Pricing for the iPhone Duo foldable starts at $1,999 for the base 256GB configuration. Apple also offers higher-capacity options, including a 2TB model priced at around $3,000, giving buyers flexibility depending on how much storage their workflow demands.
