In a significant escalation of the ongoing regional war, more than 100 people were wounded on Saturday after Iranian missiles successfully bypassed Israeli air defense systems to strike the southern towns of Arad and Dimona. Medical responders from Magen David Adom reported that the dual impacts caused extensive destruction, ripping open residential facades and leaving deep craters in the earth. The strikes mark one of the most serious breaches of Israeli airspace since the conflict began on February 28, prompting the military to launch an immediate investigation into the failure of its interception protocols.
The town of Arad bore the brunt of the casualties, with 84 people injured, including 10 who remain in serious condition. This followed an earlier strike on nearby Dimona that left 33 others wounded, including a young boy in critical condition from shrapnel injuries. Iranian state television characterized the bombardment as a direct “response” to recent attacks on Iran’s own nuclear facility at Natanz. The choice of Dimona as a target is particularly significant, as the town hosts a research facility widely believed to be the center of Israel’s unacknowledged nuclear program.
Rescue footage from the scene showed emergency crews sifting through the rubble of heavily damaged apartment blocks under the glare of flashing sirens. Local fire services reported that at least three buildings in Arad sustained “extensive damage,” with one catching fire immediately after the impact. Military spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin confirmed that while the air defense systems were active, they failed to neutralize the incoming projectiles. In response to the growing danger, the Israeli Education Ministry has ordered all remaining in-person classes to move online indefinitely.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu described the strikes as a “very difficult evening” for the nation but vowed to continue military operations against Iran and its regional allies. As Iran continues to launch daily missile waves in retaliation for the joint U.S.-Israeli campaign known as Operation Epic Fury, the targeting of energy and nuclear-sensitive sites has pushed the conflict into a volatile new phase. International observers remain on high alert, fearing that the direct exchange of fire between these two powers could lead to a broader, uncontrollable conflagration across the Middle East.
