Debate over GTA 6 console performance has intensified after comments from a former Rockstar Games technical director reignited speculation about whether the game will support 60 FPS. The discussion gained momentum after Rockstar opened pre-orders in June, with many players questioning whether current-generation consoles can deliver both smooth performance and advanced graphics. GTA 6 is scheduled for release on November 19, 2026.
Former Rockstar Games technical director John Ricchio shared his views during an appearance on the Kiwi Talkz podcast. Ricchio, who worked on Grand Theft Auto V and Red Dead Redemption, said players should not expect a stable 60 FPS on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S. He believes the game’s ambitious visual design could make higher frame rates difficult to maintain.
Ricchio explained that Rockstar is likely to prioritise graphical quality over frame rate. He said the studio will probably focus on detailed environments, dense city populations and realistic visual effects. Developers often balance performance with graphics in large open-world games. Therefore, maintaining 60 FPS while preserving visual fidelity may prove difficult on current console hardware.
Rockstar Games has not confirmed any performance targets for GTA 6. The company has also not announced whether the game will include separate performance and quality modes. Some fans expect the developer to offer both 30 FPS and 60 FPS options on more powerful consoles. Others believe Rockstar will prioritise visual quality instead. Until the studio shares official details, all performance discussions remain speculative.
Interest in GTA 6 continues to grow as launch day approaches. Players are eagerly waiting for more information about graphics, gameplay features and console optimisation. Industry analysts expect Rockstar to reveal technical details closer to release. Until then, questions surrounding 60 FPS support will remain one of the biggest talking points among fans.
