The Punjab Assembly passed key amendments to lower traffic penalties today. Motorists across the province will receive significant relief. The revised law, titled the Provincial Motor Vehicles (Fourth Amendment) Ordinance 2025, received majority approval after clearance from the relevant standing committee. This means traffic fines reduced for most vehicle categories. The law will take effect after final approval from the Governor of Punjab.
Motorcycle owners benefit the most from these changes. Fines for motorcycles have dropped from Rs 2,000 to Rs 1,000 for certain violations. Authorities have also capped the maximum fine for motorcycles at Rs 2,000. Rickshaw drivers will also see relief, with some fines falling from Rs 3,000 to Rs 1,000. More serious rickshaw violations will now carry a penalty of Rs 2,000. With traffic fines reduced, low-income drivers can breathe easier.
Car and jeep owners also receive lower penalties. Minor offense fines have dropped from Rs 5,000 to Rs 2,000. However, penalties for serious violations remain unchanged at Rs 5,000. Speed limits still carry the same fines across all vehicle categories. For vehicles with engine capacity above 2000cc, fines have dropped from Rs 20,000 to Rs 10,000, with a minimum penalty of Rs 2,000. Transport sector operators will see relief as well. Fines for Mazda trucks, coasters, and light passenger vans have fallen from Rs 20,000 to Rs 7,000. Heavy vehicles, including buses and trucks, now face maximum penalties reduced from Rs 20,000 to Rs 10,000.
The move balances enforcement with public relief. Serious violations still carry heavy penalties. Minor mistakes no longer break the bank.
