The austerity wave has finally reached Sindh. After weeks of speculation, the provincial government has made its decision official. The Home Department issued a notification on April 10, and the rules are now in effect immediately. Sindh announces new timings for markets restaurants and wedding halls across the province, and the schedule varies depending on where you live and what business you run.
Let us start with the strictest rules. Shops, markets, and shopping malls in Karachi and other divisional headquarters must now close by 9 PM. That applies throughout the week, including weekends. No exceptions for Saturday or Sunday. For districts that are not divisional headquarters, the rules are even tighter. All shops, markets, and shopping malls in those areas must shut by 8 PM. The government says these measures are part of fuel conservation efforts and align with the broader austerity push happening across the country.
But not everyone has to follow these restrictions. The notification clearly exempts several essential services. Tandoors operating as standalone shops can stay open. Milk and dairy shops, bakeries, medical stores, pharmacies, laboratories, clinics, hospitals, and fuel pumps are all exempt. So if you need bread, medicine, or fuel, you will still find them available.
Now here is where it gets interesting for the hospitality sector. Sindh announces new timings for markets restaurants and wedding halls but treats each category differently. Hotels, restaurants, and food outlets will be allowed to operate between 7 PM and 11:30 PM for dinner service. That is a tight four and a half hour window. However, home delivery and takeaway services can continue without any restriction at all. So you can still order your favorite biryani at midnight. You just cannot dine in after 11:30 PM.
Official Statement from Govt of Sindh

Marriage halls, wedding venues, and banquets across Sindh have received a slightly better deal. They will be allowed to operate between 8 PM and 12 midnight. That gives wedding hosts a solid four hour window for their ceremonies. The notification further directs commissioners and deputy commissioners, with support from Sindh Police, to ensure implementation in their respective areas. So these rules will be enforced.
The move comes days after the federal government rolled out energy conservation measures and announced early market closures in most parts of the country. Sindh had initially held back from adopting the same timings. Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said earlier this week that a decision would be made after consultation with traders and business representatives. That consultation included members of the Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry, and other business stakeholders. Now the decision is here. Sindh announces new timings for markets restaurants and wedding halls as the fuel crisis linked to the ongoing regional conflict continues to reshape daily life across Pakistan.
