The Wagah Border turned into a sea of color and emotion this Friday. Over 2,200 Sikh pilgrims from India crossed into the country to celebrate Vaisakhi Mela 2026. This 10-day pilgrimage marks the 327th Khalsa Janam Din, one of the most sacred dates in the Sikh calendar.
For many, this journey is more than just a ritual. For three elderly pilgrims, it was a return to their ancestral villages for the first time since the 1947 partition.
A Warm Welcome at the Border
Sardar Ramesh Singh Arora, the Punjab Minister for Minorities Affairs, personally received the guests. As the first Sikh minister in Punjab’s cabinet, his presence underscored Pakistan’s commitment to religious freedom.
“Pakistan is the first home for Sikhs,” Arora stated during the welcome ceremony. He emphasized that despite strained regional ties, the doors of Guru Nanak’s land remain open. He also shared that the government is currently renovating 34 more Gurdwaras to improve the experience for future visitors.
Vaisakhi Mela 2026: The Pilgrimage Schedule
The pilgrims are currently traveling under strict security to ensure a peaceful visit. The itinerary covers the most significant spiritual sites in the region:
- April 10-11: Arrival and stay at Gurdwara Janam Asthan, Nankana Sahib.
- April 12-14: Journey to Hasan Abdal for the Main Vaisakhi Ceremony at Gurdwara Panja Sahib.
- April 15-16: Visit to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur, the world’s largest Sikh shrine.
- April 17-18: Stop at Gurdwara Rohri Sahib (Eminabad) before reaching Lahore’s Gurdwara Dera Sahib.
- April 19: Final prayers and return to India via the Wagah Border.
Key Event: The central Bhog of Akhand Path Sahib will take place on Tuesday, April 14, at Gurdwara Panja Sahib.
Hospitality and Heritage
The Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB) has transformed the religious sites for the festival. Pilgrims reported high satisfaction with the arrangements, which include:
- Zero-Tolerance Security: Mobile security escorts for all bus convoys.
- Logistical Support: Dedicated counters for senior citizens and medical facilities at every stop.
- Cultural Connection: Local markets in Lahore and Nankana Sahib are hosting special “Vaisakhi Sales” for the visitors.
