A Time Capsule Underwater: 1,000 Roman Objects Found in Switzerland

Archaeologists recently finished a massive recovery mission in Lake Neuchâtel, where they found over 1,000 Roman objects found in Switzerland. This underwater site holds the cargo of a ship that likely sank between 20 and 50 AD. Because the lake’s sediment protected the items, many remain in pristine condition. Consequently, this discovery provides a rare, “brand new” look at life during the start of the Roman Empire.

Gladiator Swords and Ancient Pottery

The haul includes an incredible variety of items. Divers recovered two short gladiator swords, known as gladii, along with military tools and coins. Furthermore, the team found hundreds of ceramic plates and bowls that were still neatly stacked for transport. Experts believe this cargo was headed to a Roman military camp. Therefore, the presence of weaponry suggests that Roman legionaries likely escorted the merchant vessel on its journey.

A Miraculous Discovery

One of the most stunning finds was a wicker basket that stayed intact for two millennia. Inside, scientists found ceramic pieces used by the ship’s crew. Currently, specialists are cleaning and analyzing every item to look for stamps or traces of ancient food. Since the wreck site was kept secret for years to prevent looting, the public can now finally appreciate these historic treasures. This collection will soon move to a museum, where it will serve as a vital reference for Roman history.
