The Punjab education budget 2026-27 allocates Rs. 750 billion across scholarships, laptops, STEAM labs, IT infrastructure, and new campuses

Punjab has placed education at the center of its fiscal priorities for the coming year. Finance Minister Mian Mujtaba Shujaur Rehman presented the provincial budget for FY2026-27 in the Punjab Assembly on Tuesday, proposing Rs. 750.1 billion for the education sector. Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, provincial ministers, and members of the assembly attended the session.

The overall provincial budget stands at Rs. 5.903 trillion. That is 10.7 percent higher than the current fiscal year’s budget. Furthermore, education claims the largest share of that expanded envelope, signaling a clear political and policy priority for the Punjab government.

The breakdown of education allocations covers a wide range of initiatives. The Honhaar Scholarship Program receives Rs. 22 billion. Additionally, the Laptop Program gets Rs. 15.69 billion to continue providing students with digital tools for learning.

STEAM Labs receive a substantial Rs. 33 billion allocation. Moreover, the Punjab Education Foundation gets Rs. 55 billion, reflecting the government’s continued investment in supporting private schools serving low-income communities. IT labs in colleges receive Rs. 6.9 billion. Meanwhile, Rs. 7.8 billion goes toward new colleges, campuses, and sub-campuses across the province.

Together, these allocations reflect a strategy that combines access, technology, and infrastructure. Scholarships and laptops target individual students directly. STEAM Labs and IT infrastructure target the quality of learning environments. Furthermore, new campuses address the geographic gaps that keep many young Pakistanis out of higher education entirely.

The Punjab education budget 2026-27 also arrives at a time when the province is trying to position itself as a hub for digital skills and technology-driven development. The emphasis on STEAM, IT labs, and digital devices connects education spending directly to the broader economic agenda of producing a workforce ready for the digital economy.

Still, allocation and implementation are two different things. Punjab has announced ambitious education budgets before. Therefore, the real test will come in how effectively these funds reach classrooms, students, and institutions across the province’s diverse districts throughout the year ahead.
