PTI Takes Supreme Court Action Over Hospital Transfer Dispute

PTI contempt petition

Pakistan’s political tensions escalated significantly this week. Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf filed a formal PTI contempt petition before the Supreme Court on Saturday. Therefore, the PTI contempt petition targets Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and multiple federal ministers. Additionally, the petition names senior administrative officials as respondents. The filing alleges deliberate non-compliance with the apex court’s August 18 order. That order mandated party founder Imran Khan’s transfer to Shifa International Hospital. Furthermore, Khan required comprehensive medical evaluation at that specific facility.

Senior advocates Uzair Bhandari and PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja submitted the petition. The legal challenge requests multiple specific court actions. PTI seeks show-cause notices against all respondents. Moreover, the petition urges the court to order respondents’ personal appearance. Furthermore, PTI requests the court declare officials guilty of contempt. The petition also demands immediate measures shifting Khan to Shifa International Hospital. Additionally, PTI seeks appointment of a local commission or judicial officer. This official would oversee full implementation of the court’s instructions. Therefore, the PTI contempt petition includes comprehensive remedial measures.

Multiple officials face the contempt allegations seriously. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif appears as the primary respondent. Federal Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar is also named. Meanwhile, Information Minister Attaullah Tarar faces allegations. Furthermore, the Interior Secretary and Chief Commissioner Islamabad are respondents. Still, the Inspector General of Prisons Punjab and Adiala Jail Superintendent are included. Therefore, the PTI contempt petition targets the entire administrative hierarchy.

The core dispute centers on hospital transfer procedures. Security forces diverted Khan to the government-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences instead. The diversion occurred overnight on August 20-21. However, Khan’s personal physician Dr. Faisal Sultan expected transfer to Shifa International. Additionally, Khan’s sister Dr. Uzma Khan sought information about medical treatment. Both experienced significant delays at Adiala Jail and Shifa Hospital. They received no clear information regarding the rerouting decision. Therefore, PTI argues the government violated established judicial protocols deliberately.

Federal authorities defended their actions citing security concerns. Government officials claimed that private facility locations posed operational risks. However, PTI lawyers contend that ministers questioned the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction publicly. Furthermore, the rerouting bypassed specific medical protocols the judicial bench established. Therefore, the PTI contempt petition frames the hospital transfer as a deliberate defiance. Finally, Salman Akram Raja indicated the petition would face Supreme Court hearing by early next week.
