Pakistani Robotics Firm Hosts First Hackathon at Top US University

Pakistani Robotics Firm

Pakistani robotics data company World Context has hosted its first hackathon at the University of California, Berkeley. Thirteen teams took part, developing projects using real-world robotics datasets. Blockchain at Berkeley co-organized the event. Moreover, Google Gemini, ElevenLabs, The Hackathon Company, Lovable, Praxis Robotics and UC Berkeley Startup sponsored it.

Participants competed across hardware, software and visualization tracks using datasets that World Context provided. Sortbot won the hardware track with a project that builds robots capable of sorting different objects. Reconstructors won the software track with a project focused on reconstructing World Context data in the physical world. Furthermore, the same team’s simulation took the top spot in the visualization track.

Organizers awarded a total of $4,500, or around Rs. 1.25 million, in cash prizes. The hackathon centred on human demonstration data in robotics. This data records how people carry out physical tasks in real-world settings. Therefore, developers can use it to train robotic systems to perform similar tasks.

World Context collects this data from workers in real-world environments and supplies the datasets to robotics companies. Founder and CEO Sherdil Ali Khan said the quality of the submitted projects was one of the biggest surprises of the event. He added that the talent on display at Berkeley showed how advanced the industry is in the United States.

Khan also said tremendous opportunities exist to learn from and partner with US institutions and companies. Meanwhile, he said Pakistan can benefit from bringing these learnings home to improve its technology sector. He noted that participants used the company’s datasets in ways nobody had anticipated. This outcome demonstrated new applications of human demonstration data in robotics.

Additionally, the company plans to work with universities to organize similar events in the future. It will also explore collaboration with other institutions. However, World Context has not named the next university or event date. Still, the Berkeley hackathon marks an early step for the Pakistani company’s push into the US robotics ecosystem. Finally, World Context says more events like this could follow.
