Pakistan is set to reach a historic digital milestone tomorrow as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif presides over a formal ceremony at the Prime Minister’s House to award 5G licenses to the nation’s leading telecom operators. The event, which will be attended by Federal Minister for IT Shaza Fatima Khawaja, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, and top industry leadership, signals the official start of next-generation mobile service deployment across the country.
The issuance of these licenses follows the successful completion of all regulatory and financial requirements. All three participating telecom companies have now submitted their mandatory $15 million bank guarantees to the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), fulfilling the final conditions of the recent spectrum auction. That auction, which saw 480 MHz of the 597 MHz available spectrum sold, is expected to inject approximately $510 million into the national exchequer.
Immediately following tomorrow’s ceremony, operators are expected to flip the switch on 5G services in Islamabad and other major urban hubs. While the initial rollout will be concentrated in selected high-density areas of large cities, the network is designed for rapid, phased expansion. Technical preparations have been underway for months, with many operators having already staged the necessary hardware to ensure a smooth transition.
The 5G mandate carries significant obligations aimed at bridging the country’s digital divide. Under the terms of the new licenses, each operator is required to install 1,000 new telecom sites. Crucially, at least 200 of these sites must be located in remote or low-coverage areas, ensuring that the benefits of high-speed connectivity extend beyond the urban elite to underserved communities.
As the country prepares for the Eid-ul-Fitr holidays, the launch of 5G promises not only faster download speeds and lower latency for consumers but also a robust infrastructure upgrade capable of supporting advanced industrial and tech-driven economic growth.
