Karachi Traffic Police has rolled out a fresh plan to reshape how rickshaws operate across the city. The new Karachi rickshaw rules will require every rickshaw to run on a working meter before it can legally operate, according to officials at the Karachi Press Club. DIG Traffic Karachi Pir Muhammad Shah confirmed the move, saying it forms part of a broader push to improve road safety and traffic flow.

He also revealed that authorities are working to clear Qingqi rickshaws from major roads. According to Shah, these three-wheelers have long contributed to congestion and unsafe driving conditions on busy routes. Therefore, officials consider removing them a priority alongside the meter requirement.

Many motorists, however, have raised concerns about the city’s e-challan system. Shah acknowledged that some drivers have faced errors, since the system generates challans automatically and can occasionally misfire. Officials are now preparing a new policy to address these complaints and offer relief to affected motorists.

Despite these issues, Shah maintained that lane markings and the e-challan system have already improved traffic flow across Karachi. Still, the human cost of poor road safety remains high. Last year alone, 164 people lost their lives in accidents involving heavy vehicles within the city.

Additionally, official data shows a troubling pattern in vehicle registration. Around 45,000 vehicles remain listed under the names of previous owners instead of their current holders. This gap, officials say, complicates enforcement and accountability whenever violations occur.

Authorities have already taken action against several individuals linked to this registration issue, and they have handed some cases over to police for further investigation. Meanwhile, traffic officials say more measures will follow as the department modernizes how it manages Karachi’s roads.

For now, commuters and drivers alike will need to watch closely as the Karachi rickshaw rules take shape in the coming weeks.
