HEC Releases Lists of Recognized and Unrecognized Institutions

HEC recognized institutions

The Higher Education Commission (HEC) has shared official lists of recognized institutions and unrecognized ones, urging students and parents to verify universities and campuses before applying for admission. The advisory carries a clear warning for applicants.

HEC will not recognize degrees from institutions that do not appear on its recognized lists. Recognition decides whether a degree counts for official purposes. Therefore, a degree from an unlisted institution may carry no official recognition.

The commission also advised students to avoid universities and degree-awarding institutions that face admission bans due to irregularities. Moreover, such bans signal that regulators have found problems at the institution. Still, students who enrol despite a ban may put their studies at risk.

How to Check an Institution’s Status

HEC has directed students to four separate lists. These lists cover universities, campuses, transnational education providers, and illegal or fake institutions. The commission has published each list separately so that students can search the exact category they need.

Furthermore, each list serves a different purpose. The first list covers universities and degree-awarding institutions, while the second covers campuses of public and private institutions. Meanwhile, the third list names transnational educational institutions operating in Pakistan. The fourth list names illegal, fake and unrecognized institutions.

Checking the campus matters as much as checking the university name. Students should therefore check both the university and the specific campus before paying any fee. Parents can also use the lists to verify claims made in advertisements. Advertisements alone do not prove that an institution has official approval.

However, an institution’s absence from the recognized lists should raise immediate concern. Students who find a name on the illegal list should avoid applying. Additionally, students can compare the university name against both the recognized and illegal lists. Anyone with doubts should seek clarification from HEC before taking any step.
