Google Launches Playground to Let Anyone Build Games With AI

Google Playground

Google has launched Google Playground, a browser-based platform that lets users create custom games with AI prompts. The experimental platform launches today in the US for users aged 18 and older. Moreover, users do not need any coding experience.

The platform uses a conversational interface where users describe the game they want in natural language. They can start from a blank canvas, remix starter prompts or use guided support to develop an idea. Furthermore, users can ask the system to change game physics, rewrite rules, customize characters or modify environments. They can also test the game immediately. Google says users stay in control of the creative direction throughout the process.

Once a game is complete, users can share it through a link or publish it to the Explore gallery. Selected genres will also support multiplayer and in-game leaderboards. Meanwhile, the gallery will surface games based on ratings, play activity and whether they feel fresh, creative and fun.

Playground is free to use. However, Google One subscribers will receive higher weekly token limits depending on their plan. The platform runs on Google’s existing foundation models, including Gemini, Nano Banana and Lyria. Google combined them with a custom system that it refined using internal games and evaluations.

Google and Unity also announced Unity Spark, a separate AI-powered game creation experience. It aims to feel closer to a professional game development engine. Additionally, multiple people will be able to create games together at the same time. Games made with Unity Spark will also be shareable on Playground. Google plans a closed beta later this year, and the waitlist opens today.

The announcement follows similar moves from Meta and Roblox. Meta recently announced AI game creation tools for its Horizon platform. Facebook and Instagram could also recommend games built with them. Meanwhile, Roblox has started testing a Build feature that lets users create games with AI on their phones. The feature is in public alpha testing in selected countries.

Therefore, competition in AI game creation is growing, and Google Playground enters a crowded field. Finally, players will watch how the Explore gallery develops after launch.
