The European Parliament has approved the creation of the EU Talent Pool, a new digital platform aimed at helping companies recruit skilled workers from outside the European Union.
Lawmakers voted in favor of the proposal with 414 votes supporting the measure, 182 opposing it, and 21 abstentions.
The EU Talent Pool will function as an online platform where employers in participating EU countries can connect with non-EU jobseekers, particularly in industries experiencing labor shortages. Both employers and applicants will be able to register on the platform free of charge, making it easier for companies to find qualified candidates from around the world.
Under the proposed system, jobseekers will be able to create detailed profiles highlighting their skills, qualifications, and preferred work sectors. Employers can then browse these profiles and match them with available job opportunities during the recruitment process.
EU member states may also speed up immigration procedures for candidates selected through the platform. However, the authority to grant work and residence permits will remain with individual countries, and applicants will still need to undergo standard immigration and security checks.
Before the initiative can officially come into effect, the regulation must receive formal approval from the Council of the European Union. Once approved, the EU Talent Pool is expected to become a key tool for addressing labour shortages while creating new opportunities for skilled professionals outside the European Union.
