Bangladesh has confiscated assets worth about $6.2 billion linked to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, her family, and several business groups. The latest action in the Sheikh Hasina assets investigation comes as authorities continue corruption and money laundering probes. Officials also said they are working to recover more funds from overseas.
Authorities launched the investigations after a student-led uprising removed Hasina from power in 2024. She later fled to India, where she has remained since August that year. Investigators have since examined her financial records, family members, and business groups that allegedly benefited during her 15 years in office.
The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit said it seized assets worth 570 billion taka inside the country. It also confiscated another 190 billion taka in overseas assets. Together, the total value reached 760 billion taka, or about $6.2 billion.
Agency chief Ikhtiar Mohammad Mamun said investigators have opened 98 cases related to Hasina and people linked to her. He added that officials continue to trace money moved abroad. According to Mamun, authorities hope to report positive progress in recovering overseas assets before the end of the year.
Legal pressure on Hasina has also increased since her removal from office. Courts have convicted her in absentia in several corruption cases. Some of those cases involve the allocation of residential plots in an upscale area of Dhaka.
A Bangladeshi court has also sentenced Hasina to death in a separate case involving crimes against humanity. She has not returned to Bangladesh to face the charges. However, recent reports said she plans to return before the end of the year.
The government has already requested Hasina’s extradition from India. Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed said officials want her to return so the legal process can continue. He also said the courts will decide whether any appeal is possible.
Bangladesh continues to expand its financial investigations while pursuing assets inside and outside the country. As the Sheikh Hasina assets investigation moves forward, authorities say they remain focused on recovering public funds and completing the ongoing legal process.
