Apple may finally be ready to add touch to its laptop lineup. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, the company is preparing to launch its first touchscreen MacBook Pro next month. Apple will reportedly offer the new laptops in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes. Both models will reportedly feature OLED displays with touch support.
Mac users have relied on trackpads and keyboards for years. Fans have debated this possibility for just as long. Still, for a company that has long resisted touch on its laptops, this would be a notable change.
Gurman says the new models will be significantly lighter than the current ones. Weight is a key concern for portable computers. Apple has reportedly redesigned the internal component layout to cut weight. However, Apple has not shared an exact figure yet.
The move to OLED panels with touchscreen support is also the biggest change, marking a major shift for the MacBook lineup. Additionally, the display change could affect how users interact with macOS.
Inside, the laptops should run on Apple’s M6 chip, according to the report. Apple designs its own chips for Mac laptops, so the M6 would continue that approach. Moreover, Apple is reportedly testing the laptops with macOS 27.2. Testing with macOS 27.2 suggests the software is already in an advanced stage. Therefore, the launch timeline looks realistic if testing continues smoothly. Still, Apple has not confirmed any of these details officially.
The MacBook Pro will not be the only device getting an OLED upgrade. Meanwhile, Apple is also reportedly planning an OLED iPad mini. The tablet should keep the same 8.3-inch screen size. The iPad Pro already uses OLED, so the smaller tablet would follow that direction. Furthermore, nothing currently points to a major redesign.
Buyers will want to watch for pricing and availability details closer to launch. Finally, buyers should treat the touchscreen MacBook Pro as a rumor until Apple announces it.
