Pakistan’s Mobile Phone Factories Just Had Their Worst Month of the Year — Here Is Why It Matters
Local mobile manufacturing decline of 35% in April 2026 wipes out nearly one million units of production in a single month
Pakistan’s local mobile phone industry hit a sharp wall in April. Local manufacturing and assembly dropped 35 percent month on month, falling from 2.79 million units in March to just 1.81 million units in April 2026. The Pakistan mobile manufacturing decline translated into nearly one million fewer handsets produced during the month. Moreover, total mobile phone availability across the market fell 34 percent, dropping from 3.14 million units in March to 2.18 million units in April.
Despite the sharp drop, local manufacturers held their ground in terms of market share. Domestic assembly still accounted for 83 percent of total mobile phone demand in April. Furthermore, that figure compares favourably against the broader context, even if it slipped from 89 percent in March. Imported handsets, meanwhile, edged up slightly to 0.37 million units from 0.35 million the previous month. Therefore, imports grew modestly but did not flood the market to compensate for lower local output.
The broader picture for 2026 remains relatively strong. During the first four months of the calendar year, local manufacturers produced a cumulative 9.17 million mobile phones. Imports added another 1.59 million units. Together, that puts combined availability at 10.76 million units for the period, with locally assembled devices accounting for approximately 85 percent of the market. Therefore, April’s dip looks more like a monthly correction than a structural collapse.
A direct year-on-year comparison for April is not possible. PTA published April and May 2025 figures on a cumulative basis, making individual month comparisons unavailable. Still, the month-on-month swing is significant enough to demand attention. Finally, whether April’s slowdown reflects seasonal factors, supply chain disruptions, or shifting demand patterns will become clearer as May data emerges in the weeks ahead.
