Sindh Government Launches New Electric Vehicle Taxi Project

Electric Vehicle taxi project

Sindh Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon recently inaugurated a new Electric Vehicle taxi project in the province. This initiative marks a significant addition to the government’s growing urban transport portfolio. During the launch ceremony, officials signed key agreements with Sindh Bank and the Sindh Development Fund. The Sindh Mass Transit Authority will also support the rollout of these eco-friendly vehicles. Memon stated that the project aims to promote green transport and improve urban mobility across Karachi.

The provincial government expects this Electric Vehicle taxi project to generate many employment opportunities for young people. By introducing modern transport solutions, the administration hopes to modernize the local travel infrastructure. Memon highlighted that Sindh continues to expand its successful transport services, including the famous Pink Bus. These initiatives have already received international attention for their focus on sustainability and innovation. The introduction of electric buses earlier this year paved the way for this new taxi fleet.

Expanding Women’s Mobility and Economic Participation

The minister also discussed the success of gender-specific transport options during the event. The Pink Bus service remains unique because it features entirely female drivers and conductors. This ensures safer travel options for women commuting across the city. Additionally, the government has introduced Pink EV scooters to support female mobility further. These related initiatives aim to increase the participation of women in various economic activities throughout the province.

The response to these programs has been overwhelming according to recent data. While 150 women initially obtained licenses for the scooters, over 20,000 applications have since been received. The government is currently providing professional training to these participants to ensure road safety. Memon also urged local industrialists to invest in EV manufacturing within Pakistan. He noted that the Dhabeji Special Economic Zone is an ideal location for establishing new manufacturing facilities. By prioritizing electric vehicles in procurement, the government aims to lead the country toward a greener future.
