Xiaomi has launched the Xiaomi 18 Pro and Xiaomi 18 Pro Max in China. The launch came just hours after Qualcomm introduced its latest flagship processors. Therefore, both companies’ announcements arrived almost back to back.
The Xiaomi 18 Pro is the first commercially available smartphone powered by the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6. Meanwhile, the Xiaomi 18 Pro Max is the first to use the more powerful Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Additionally, both phones bring larger batteries, updated telephoto cameras, hardware-level privacy displays and upgraded rear screens with new AI features.
Design and Display
The Xiaomi 18 Pro features a 6.4-inch LTPO AMOLED display. However, the 18 Pro Max carries a larger 6.9-inch LTPO AMOLED panel. Both displays offer 2K resolution, a variable 1Hz to 120Hz refresh rate and up to 4,000 nits of peak brightness. Xiaomi protects the screens with Dragon Crystal Glass 3.
Both phones also introduce hardware-level privacy displays designed to stop people from viewing screen content at an angle. This privacy feature supports location-based activation and can block notifications, floating windows and split-screen app content from side viewing. Users can access it through the dedicated AI button on the left side.
Both models retain the rear display found on their predecessors. Instead, Xiaomi has expanded its functionality this time around. Users can now create rear-screen mini apps through the Xiao AI assistant. Xiaomi demonstrated apps for drinking-water reminders, egg cooking timers and recipe recommendations.
The rear display can also show custom AI wallpapers and widgets. Furthermore, it provides access to Xiao AI and works as a viewfinder for the rear cameras. The phones come in black, white, pink and blue. Also, Xiaomi is offering a special red edition with transparent elements on the rear panel. Both phones carry an IP69 rating for dust and water resistance.
Internals and Software
The Xiaomi 18 Pro uses Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6, making it the first phone on the market with this chipset. The Xiaomi 18 Pro Max instead uses the Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6. Both smartphones run Xiaomi HyperOS 4.
Both models come in 12GB/256GB, 12GB/512GB, 16GB/512GB and 16GB/1TB configurations. Xiaomi also offers a 16GB/1TB Special Edition of both phones.
Cameras
Both phones feature the same triple rear-camera system. The main camera uses a 200MP Light Hunter 960 sensor with a 1/1.28-inch sensor size and a 23mm-equivalent focal length. Meanwhile, a second 200MP periscope telephoto camera uses a 1/1.56-inch sensor and a 75mm-equivalent focal length, providing 3.2x optical zoom. The third camera is a 50MP ultrawide with a 102-degree field of view. Users can also use the rear display as a viewfinder when taking photos with the rear cameras.
Battery and Pricing
The Xiaomi 18 Pro packs a 7,000mAh battery, 11 percent larger than its predecessor’s. The Xiaomi 18 Pro Max carries an 8,500mAh battery, marking a 13 percent increase over the previous model. Both phones support 100W wired charging, 50W wireless charging and 27W reverse wireless charging.
The Xiaomi 18 Pro costs $895 for 12GB/256GB, rising to $1,343 for 16GB/1TB, while the Special Edition costs $1,492. The Xiaomi 18 Pro Max starts at $1,045 for 12GB/256GB and reaches $1,492 for 16GB/1TB, with its Special Edition priced at $1,642. Finally, Xiaomi has confirmed that the Xiaomi 18 Pro series will launch globally later this year.
