FIFA has lifted the one-match suspension handed to United States forward Folarin Balogun. The FIFA Balogun suspension lifted decision makes him available for Monday’s World Cup last-16 match against Belgium. Balogun received a red card during the USA’s 2-0 victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina. A video review triggered the automatic suspension following the incident.
However, FIFA announced on Sunday that officials had suspended the ban. The decision came under FIFA’s disciplinary regulations allowing such actions. According to the Associated Press, US President Donald Trump reportedly called FIFA president Gianni Infantino. Trump asked the governing body to review the incident. Therefore, high-level political pressure influenced the FIFA Balogun suspension lifted outcome.
Reacting to the decision, Trump wrote on social media: “Thank you to FIFA for doing what was right, and reversing a great injustice!” So the US president publicly celebrated the reversal. However, the move drew sharp criticism from Belgium. The Royal Belgian Football Association said it was “astonished” by the reversal. Additionally, head coach Rudi Garcia questioned the ruling directly.

“I didn’t know that in the offices of FIFA the 5th of July was the 1st of April in Europe,” Garcia said sarcastically. His comments suggested the decision seemed like an April Fools’ joke. Furthermore, he implied FIFA had acted foolishly under political pressure. Therefore, Belgium’s leadership expressed strong displeasure with the ruling.
FIFA said officials deferred Balogun’s suspension for a one-year probationary period. This falls under Article 27 of FIFA’s disciplinary rules. Consequently, if Balogun commits a similar offence during that period, authorities will enforce the suspension. Therefore, the punishment is deferred rather than eliminated entirely.
Balogun has scored three goals at the tournament so far. The forward is expected to play a key role as the USA bids to reach the World Cup quarterfinals. The Americans have not achieved this feat since 2002. Therefore, Balogun’s availability strengthens the US squad significantly.
The incident raised questions about political influence in FIFA decision-making. Critics argued that presidential pressure should not affect sporting outcomes. However, FIFA officials maintained they applied their rules correctly. Additionally, the deferred suspension approach created a middle ground. Finally, the FIFA Balogun suspension lifted decision remains controversial despite the governing body’s justification.
