Punjab likely to extend free public transport

Free public transport in Punjab will remain operational for another month. However, the final decision will come from Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. Therefore, Punjab likely to extend free public transport facility as millions of citizens benefit daily. Official sources confirmed that the Chief Minister has called a meeting on Monday for the final decision. The Transport Department has already sent recommendations for an extension. Work in this regard has also been completed.

According to the proposal text, free travel will continue on multiple services for one more month. These include the Orange Line train, Metro Bus service, Speedo Bus, and Electric Bus. Consequently, Punjab likely to extend free public transport facility to maintain relief for commuters. Sources say this facility started due to recent increases in petroleum product prices. Millions of people benefit from this scheme every single day.

About 290,000 passengers travel free on the Orange Line train daily. More than 100,000 passengers travel free on the Metro Bus. A total of about 800,000 citizens across Punjab benefit from this facility every day. The transport department has also recommended that free travel gradually end when petroleum prices return to normal. Therefore, Punjab likely to extend free public transport facility only until global oil prices stabilize.

The final decision will come in a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister. A formal announcement is expected after that meeting. For now, commuters can expect another month of free rides across the province.
