The Punjab government has launched body-worn cameras for police personnel as part of efforts to strengthen accountability, improve public safety and modernize policing. The project has started in Lahore on the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. Trained personnel are already prepared to use the cameras during field duties. Additionally, authorities have begun installing docking stations at police stations across the city.

Personnel from the Punjab Police, Punjab Highway Patrol, Dolphin Force and traffic police will use the cameras while on duty. The devices will connect with Smart Safe City systems already operating in 43 cities. This connection will enable live monitoring through district control rooms. Meanwhile, the cameras themselves pack a wide range of features into a compact device.

The devices include facial recognition, automatic number plate reading, and threat alerts. They also support audio and video recording, photography, calling, and built-in storage. Furthermore, the cameras feature push-to-talk communication with control rooms, along with an SOS button for emergencies. After each shift, officers must return the cameras to designated docking stations. Recorded data will then transfer automatically for secure storage.

Maryam Nawaz said the system would strengthen police monitoring and help curb corruption within the force. She added that public safety, particularly for vulnerable groups, would remain a key measure of the initiative’s success. Therefore, the government appears to be positioning this rollout as both a transparency tool and a broader step toward modern, tech-driven policing across the province.
